Click Here | Product Description: The Maltese Islands are positively mythic with Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso's Cave . The narrow streets of their towns and villages are crowded with Renaissance cathedrals and Baroque palaces. As the countryside is dotted with the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum. The Maltese archipelago is situated at the centre of the Mediterranean, with Malta 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km north of Africa. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. The total population is 400,000 inhabitants over an area of 316 sq km and a coastline of 196.8km. The largest island and also cultural, commercial and administrative centre is Malta. The second largest island and more rural is Gozo, Comino is largely uninhabited.

By John Swansburg
Released: 2011-07-12 Kindle Edition (46 pages)
 | List Price: $2.99* *(As of 05:12 Pacific 5 Feb 2012 More Info)
Click Here | Product Description: For the tourist with a catholic taste in history, or a taste for Catholic history, there are few destinations as tantalizing as Malta, a small island nation just south of Sicily and north of Libya. The island has been inhabited since 5000 B.C., and the ancient society that flourished there left behind some of the oldest architectural ruins on the planet. Rome and Carthage fought for control of the island during the Punic Wars; in 1881, a well-preserved Roman villa from this period was discovered just outside the walls of Malta’s ancient capital of Mdina. (It lay under an Islamic burial ground dating from the Middle Ages, when the island was controlled by the Fatimid Caliphate.)
That’s a lot of history per square foot—Malta is only slightly larger than Martha’s Vineyard. Because of its strategic location in the center of the Mediterranean, just about every Western power has tried to control it, and each has left its mark. (Napoleon, who seized the island in 1798, left his by stealing everything that wasn’t nailed down.)
Slate culture editor John Swansburg and artist Happy Menocal soak up the island's ancient history and present-day culture, seeing both prehistoric temples and a Popeye theme park. Menocal's original paintings accompany Swansburg's travelogue. |

With some 300 days of sunshine a year, Malta has long been known for package holidays. But anyone going to Malta merely to lie in the sun is seriously missing out. Packed into this island nation are 7,000 years of fascinating and visible history, and the Bradt guide delves into Malta’s temples and archaeology more comprehensively than any other guidebook. Also covering birdwatching, summer festas, the less commercialized islands of Gozo and Comino, and highlighting accommodation and restaurants of interest and character rather than just looking at convenience and budget, this guidebook discovers the Malta beyond the tourist resorts. |
